The Brownwood Lady Lions converted just three first-half field goals, which led to a 28-point deficit by halftime as the Class 3A No. 2 Jim Ned Lady Indians coasted to a 67-38 victory Tuesday morning at Warren Gym.
The Lady Lions (7-3) were outscored by Jim Ned (7-0) by just one point in the second half, 28-27, but the damage in the first half was too much to overcome.
“We started the game and we were intimated a little bit,” said Lady Lions head coach Heather Hohertz. “Our flow on offense wasn’t good, our defense was back on its heels and against a really good team like Jim Ned and the way they shoot the ball you can’t have missed assignments, you have to really get up and pressure them. They came out hot and we dug ourselves too big a hole, but we came out and competed and responded well after halftime.”
Brownwood ended up shooting 25 percent (11 of 44) from the floor, 23 percent (3 of 13) from the three-point arc and 61 percent (13 of 21) at the free throw line. The Lady Lions pulled down 28 rebounds, but committed 16 turnovers and recorded only one steal.
The Lady Lions received nine points from Icess Hall, seven from Jade Morin, six each from Lanie Johnson and Miranda Northcutt, four apiece from Hannah Deen and Nylah Hall and two points from Trinity Roberts.
Jim Ned was sparked by a 24-point effort from Gracee Cooley and 18 points from Riley Grohman. Both Grohman, with 14 points, and Cooley, with 13 points, outscored the Lady Lions in the first half, as Brownwood trailed 39-11 at the break.
Coming out of intermission, the Lady Lions outscored Jim Ned in the third period, 15-14, and the Lady Indians only owned a 14-12 edge on the scoreboard over the final eight minutes.
“I told them in the locker room at halftime you have to come out with confidence and not be intimidated no matter who you play,” Hohertz said. “You’re that athletic and that skilled this year that you can play with anyone. I told them how you respond will tell me what kind of team we have. Do we have fighters or are we going to get knocked out? They proved they were fighters and fought til the end of the game.”
Next up for the Lady Lions is a 6:15 p.m. Tuesday home contest against Christoval.
