Just two days after witnessing a 24-point lead vanish in a six-point home loss to Lampasas, the Brownwood Lions put that unfortunate scenario in the rearview mirror and throttled the Llano Yellowjackets, 78-29, Monday afternoon at Warren Gym.
Playing in the second of three home games in four days, the Lions (3-2) again raced out to early lead of 21-10 after one quarter, and only extended the lead from there with a 40-20 halftime advantage and a 65-27 cushion heading into the fourth period.
“It’s nice to be able to get to the next one and not have to wait a full week, so it was nice to turn around on a Monday and put Saturday behind us,” said Lions head coach Will Parker. “Having (football addition) Devin (Eanes) out there gave us a little more energy and I was just real proud of the team ball I saw throughout the game.”
Three Lions finished in double figures led by Casey Friebel, who scored all 26 of his points in the first three quarters, along with 11 from Santiago Alvizo, and 10 points from Elias Perez. Also contributing were Durham Brown with eight points, Ross Strasner with seven, Bennett Windham and Noah Pyle with six each, and Eanes and Hayden Brumbelow with two points apiece as every Lion scored.
“These guys need to believe in each other and when everybody’s contributing it makes them feel good, and it makes their teammates feel good when they can get others the ball,” Parker said. “We weren’t afraid to shoot the ball, we looked confident shooting so that was nice. Casey’s had two games now where he’s come out and been really hot and that always help you for sure.”
Despite allowing just 29 points, Parker saw plenty of room for improvement on the defensive end of the floor.
“Defense is where we have to have more energy,” Parker said. “We can’t look at the scoreboard and decide how we’re going to play defense. That’s the one thing to me we have to improve on, but offensively I thought we looked pretty good.”
Both the Brownwood Lady Lions and Lions will host Jim Ned in a doubleheader Tuesday at Warren Gym, with the varsity girls set to tip off at 11:15 a.m. and the varsity boys to follow at 12:30 p.m.
“We’re going to need all our guys again tomorrow when we play Jim Ned,” Parker said. “They play really tough man to man defense and they play a tough schedule. They don’t have their football guys yet, but they’re a good basketball team and their coach does a good job. I look forward to hosting hopefully a really good basketball game.”
