James Edward Hammonds, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother passed away peacefully on October 28, 2024, at Coleman County Medical Center in Coleman, Texas. Born on December 22, 1940, in Coleman, James dedicated his life to his family and community.

James graduated from Coleman High School, after which he committed over thirty years of service to the City of Coleman as the Street Superintendent. His work and leadership positively impacted the lives of countless citizens in Coleman. He had a remarkable work ethic and sense of duty, and his dedication to his job reflected his deep love for his hometown.

On April 9, 1960, James married his beloved wife, Judy Gray, in Brownsville, Texas, an event that marked the beginning of a beautiful partnership and family life. Together, they raised four children: James, Jeff, Janna, and Jeani. He took immense pride in being a husband, father, and grandfather, finding joy in each moment spent with his wife and family.

James was also a man of diverse interests. He loved sports and enjoyed woodworking, delving into Bible study, and pursuing his hobby as a rockhound. His passion for travel took him across the United States, visiting every state except Hawaii, where he and the family created lasting memories together on the road.

He is survived by his loving wife, Judy Hammonds of Coleman; two sons, James E. Hammonds, II and wife Maria of Austin, Jeff Hammonds and wife Michelle of Abilene; two daughters, Janna Watson and husband Thomas of Coleman and Jeani Baker of Coleman; ten grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren. James is remembered fondly by his sister, Judy Rylee of Waxahachie, and two brothers, David Hammonds of Grand Junction, Colorado, and Danny Hammonds of Coleman.

James is preceded in death by his parents, Dan and Iva Hammonds; his siblings, Virginia Gandy, Iva Dell Elkins, Jackie Hammonds, and Pat Hammonds; and one grandson, James Edward Hammonds, III.

A visitation will be held on November 1, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Stevens Funeral Home, located at 400 W Pecan Street in Coleman. Family and friends are invited to a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 2, 2024, at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel. A private interment will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Chad Watson, Tiffany Baker, Blake Hammonds, P.J. Hammonds, Gatlin Baker, Quinton Hammonds, Bryson Hammonds, and Gunner Watson.

The family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in memory of James be made to the Coleman Senior Citizens Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 785, Coleman, Texas 76834.

James Edward Hammonds will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him. His legacy of love and dedication lives on through his family and the many lives he touched throughout his lifetime.
