Zephyr, Brookesmith, Blanket earn spots in UIL Cross Country State Championships

The Zephyr Bulldogs, Brookesmith Lady Mustang Harley Gilliam and Blanket Tiger Alex Valdez are all headed to Old Settlers Park in Round Rock Saturday, Nov. 2 for the UIL Class A Cross Country State Championships based on performances at regional meets Tuesday.

The Zephyr Bulldogs placed third as a team at the Region IV-A cross country meet

in Corpus Christi, while Gilliam (14:42.32) came in 16th overall and eighth among girl runners on non state-qualifying teams. The top four teams and top 10 runners not on those teams move on to state.

Meanwhile, at the Region III-A meet in Grand Prairie, Valdez was clocked at 18:43.8 which was good for eighth place overall and fourth among runners on non-qualifying teams.

Back in Corpus, the Bulldogs tallied 74 points in Corpus Christi, which left them behind Comstock (43 points) and McMullen County (72 points).

Eli Williams came in third in a time of 17:26.29 to pace Zephyr’s effort trailed by Aaron Fagan (5th, 17:28.39), Riley McCuller (13th, 18:49.94), Spencer Marwitz (15th, 18:54.18), Cash Whisenhunt (43rd, 20:30.5), Slade Butler (45th, 20:46.47), and Reese Hamm (48th, 20:55.99).

Also in Corpus, the Brookesmith Lady Mustangs as a team finished in 15th place with 362 points as others running included Hayden Eisenhauser (38th, 16:06.71), Ameriah Balleza (93rd, 17:57.31), Brooklyn Haby (99th, 18:14.76), Hannah Graves (116th, 19:09.57), Amberlee Langley (131st, 20:29.28) and Chloe Dye (132nd, 20:31.5).

Competing individually for the Zephyr Lady Bulldogs in Corpus were Kathryn Williams (44th, 16:06.1) and Hadley Phillips (45th, 16:06.11).

In Grand Prairie, the Blanket Tigers came in seventh in the boys team standings aided by efforts from Cameron Aultman (61st, 22:54.77), Kannon Kensing (75th, 23:25.9), Wyatt Meadows (87th 24:15.29), and Kade Russell (95th, 25:26.38)

Meanwhile, in girls action Blanket Lady Tiger Audyona Flores placed 35th in a time of 14:16.75.

May also competed at the Region III-A meet as Mikey Scheriger missed reaching state by one spot, as he came in 11th among runners on non-state qualifying teams and 23rd overall in a time of 20:11.79.

Also, the May Lady Tigers placed 14th as a team led by Chloe Lord (34th 14:15.93), Aubree Gerhardt (61st, 15:19.82), Kenlyn King (76th, 15:42.35), Jordyn Gerhardt (102nd, 17:03.46), and Angie Medina (121st, 18:08.8)

Outside of Brown County, the Richland Springs Lady Coyotes earned a state berth with a second-place team finish Tuesday in Corpus Christi, led by overall meet champion Rylie Eckert (13:03.35).

Also moving on to state for the Lady Coyotes, who finished with 121 points to champion McMullen County’s 22, are Raegan Eckert (24th, 15:12.57), Emma Bryant (27th, 15:20.54), Mallory Okerson (34th, 15:57.76), Paige Bailey (35th, 15:59.11) and Kinzley Daly (95th, 18:05.97).

At the Region III-A meet, Sidney’s Rees Miller claimed a state berth as he was eighth among runners on non-qualifying teams with a time of 20:04.2 in the boys race, while Rising Star’s Laynee Allgood placed 10th at 13:45.98 in the girls race among runners on non-qualifying teams to advance.

Back on Monday in Corpus Christi, the Goldthwaite Lady Eagles also secured a state berth with a Region IV-2A championship performance of 57 points.

Goldthwaite easily outdistance runner-up Mason (128), sparked the efforts of Payten McGee (2nd, 12:55.13), Emily Bartek (4th, 13:16.89), Madison Wood (14th, 14:01.33), Rylie Hillis (25th, 14:33.79), Addisyn Howard (28th, 14:34.89), Jacey Jernigan (51st, 15:15.98), and Kenley Howard (62nd, 15:27.44).

The Lady Eagles will compete at state at 8:15 a.m. Friday, Nov. 1.
