Milbert Frank Pokorney was called home to be with his Savior on October 8, 2024, in Brownwood, Texas, at the age of 83. Milbert was born to John and Agnes Pokorney in Taylor, Texas on December 10, 1940. He is preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Jeri Steger Pechal; and his brothers Edward Pokorney and Raymond Pokorney. 

Milbert is survived by his wife, Jean Pokorney; his sons Trevor (Suzanne) Pokorney and Reagan Pokorney; grandchildren Jake Pokorney, Rachel Pokorney, and N. Travis Pokorney; sister Lou Heimann; brothers Johnny (Sissy) Pokorney and Daniel (Sherri) Pokorney; sisters-in-law Liz Pokorney and Shirley Pokorney; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members.

Upon graduation from Pflugerville High School in 1958, Milbert worked for Steck Printing Co. and attended The University of Texas. He enlisted in the Army Reserve in 1960, and then transferred to the Air Force Reserve. He proudly served his country for seven years.

Milbert spent much of his adult life working for the Bell System. He joined Western Electric in 1960 as an installer. He went on to become a supervisor and then a manager at Southwestern Bell and AT&T. He retired from the Bell System in 1991 after 31 years of service.

Milbert met the love of his life, Jean Balcar Pokorney, in 1963. They married later that year and enjoyed almost 61 years of marriage. They had two sons, Trevor and Reagan. As a family, they especially enjoyed the outdoors. They spent time together hiking, fishing at the Texas coast, hunting in Central and South Texas, and exploring state and national parks. 

After retirement, Milbert and Jean purchased a ranch outside of Brownwood in Indian Creek, Texas, where they raised cattle and hay. Although retired, Milbert never slowed down. He worked hard on their property, and thoroughly enjoyed ranch life with Jean by his side. He especially loved when his family would visit. Many family members enjoyed their time at Milbert and Jean’s ranch, celebrating Christmases, Thanksgivings, birthdays and other occasions. Although Milbert loved being at the ranch watching the beautiful sunsets, he and Jean also enjoyed traveling together. They visited each of the 50 states and numerous other countries.

Near to Milbert’s heart was his relationship with God. Early in his life, he received Jesus as his Savior. It was important to him to always find a church in each city he lived in, even while moving often for his job. In Brownwood, Milbert and Jean were devoted members of Central United Methodist Church for over 30 years. Recently, they found a new church home at Coggin Avenue Baptist Church and have been warmly welcomed.

Milbert will be fondly remembered for his sense of humor, his kindness, his service to others, his love of family, and his devotion to Jean. He is dearly loved and deeply missed. However, those who love him are comforted in knowing he is now in the presence of Jesus. To celebrate a life well-lived, a memorial service will be held at Coggin Avenue Baptist Church on Saturday, October 26th at 11:00 AM. Arrangements are under the direction of Blaylock Funeral Home of Brownwood.
