SALSA, the Strategic Alliance for Leadership and Social Action, will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with events to be held at Wiggins Park and The Depot on Friday and Saturday, September 27 and 28.

SALSA President, Raul Martinez, said “This year’s celebration will include an Annual Meeting of the group, the dedication of a special memorial tree, the induction of four additional Mexicano Trailblazers, and a fiesta. Mexican Americans are proud of who we are, what we have become, and proud of the many contributions we have made to our city, state and nation.”

On Friday, September 27, at 6:00 pm, SALSA members will gather at Wiggins Park for their Annual Meeting, as required in the organization’s Bylaws. A member will be elected President and thereby serve in the Board of Directors. A 5-year review of the group’s accomplishments to date will be presented.

On Saturday, September 28, at 11:00 am, SALSA members will lead friends, allies, public officials and special guests gathered at Wiggins Park in dedicating a tree, donated by SALSA, that was recently planted at the park in memory of the late Jon Ochoa who oversaw the planting of 39 Family Memorial Trees at the park.

Later, at 5:30 pm on Saturday, four Mexicano Trailblazers of Brownwood will be honored at The Depot. They are the late Dr. Joseph C. Ballejo, the late Rudy Camacho, Leroy Joseph DeAnda, and the late Felix F. Salazar.

Immediately following the Trailblazers ceremony and continuing until 11:00 pm, the SALSA celebration will continue with music, dancing, food, non-alcoholic beverages, Loteria, pinatas, arts and crafts, Selena contest, games for children and much more. Admission is free.
