Arrest made for multiple charges following brief foot pursuit

The Brownwood Police Department issued the following press release Friday morning:

On Thursday, September 19, 2024, at approximately 5 p.m., Officer Charles Durning was patrolling in the 2800 block of Southside Dr (4th St) when he observed 36-year-old Charles Austin Shaw, of Brownwood, sitting in a black sedan at the gas pumps of Food Plaza.

Shaw was known to have warrants for his arrest. Officer Durning pulled into the parking lot, and observed Shaw exit the vehicle and run eastbound into a residential area.

A short time later, Officer Logan Humphries observed Shaw hiding behind old furniture that had been discarded on the side of the road in the 2800 block of 3rd St.  Officer Humphries gave instructions to Shaw which were ignored as he fled further east.

Officer Humphries ran after Shaw, continuing to give instructions for him to stop.  Shaw refused and fled eastbound through an alleyway and onto Willis St, where he was eventually caught and arrested.

Officers returned to the vehicle Shaw was driving and observed a syringe atop the center console.  Further inventory of the vehicle revealed more syringes, two sets of lock picks, and a single-shot open break 12-gauge shotgun modified with a short barrel and handmade pistol grip.Other items of evidence/contraband were gathered prior to the vehicle being towed.

At the conclusion of the investigation, Shaw was charged with:

  • Evading Arrest/Detention w/Previous Convictions
  • Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon
  • Possession of a Prohibited Weapon
  • Unlawful use of a Criminal Instrument
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
  • Brown County Warrant – Bond Forfeiture for Possession of a Controlled Substance
  • Brown County Warrant – Evading Arrest
  • 10 Brownwood Municipal Court warrants
