Jim Bob Smith, a cherished member of the community and a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on September 14, 2024, in Talpa, Texas. He was born on April 20, 1960, in Alpine, Texas, and he lived a life filled with passion, creativity, and a profound connection to the land and lifestyle he cherished.

Jim Bob was a master electrician at Jann Electric in Monahans for many years, where he earned a reputation for his work and dedication. Known as a jack of all trades, he had an exceptional talent for building and fixing anything that came his way. His ability to solve problems and tackle challenges with ingenuity was admired by many.

Growing up in Fort Stockton, Mexico, and Terlingua, Jim Bob attended school in these areas, laying the foundation for a lifelong journey that melded a love for the plains with practical craftsmanship. He was deeply passionate about the cowboy lifestyle, which was not just a vocation for him, but a way of life that influenced his every endeavor.

Socially, Jim Bob was known for his vibrant personality. Always the life of the party, he reveled in the company of his friends, often engaging in lively boot scooting and sharing drinks, creating memories that would last a lifetime. His infectious spirit and warmth drew people to him, making him a friend to many.

Jim Bob is survived by his mother, Vera Blair of San Angelo; his children, Erin Rae Gary of Odessa, and Jim Bob Smith, II and wife Hanna of Robert Lee. He adored his grandchildren, Jonah Payne, Ezra Dutch, Nikolai Smith, Kodiak Smith, and Lovela Smith, whose laughter and joy brought immense pride to his heart. He is also mourned by his brothers, Walter Smith, Lance Smith, Herman Everett, Bruce Irwin, and Tommy Rice, who will remember him fondly.

He is preceded in death by his father, Henry “Punk” Smith, and his brother, Doug Irwin, both of whom shaped his life and character.

Jim Bob Smith’s legacy will endure through the stories and memories shared by those who knew and loved him. His contributions to his craft, his passion for life, and his unwavering spirit will forever be cherished by his family and the community he served.

A memorial service will be announced at a later time. Arrangements are entrusted to Stevens Funeral Home, 400 W. Pecan Street, in Coleman.
