Jose Portillo sentenced to 40 years for murder for July 2022 shooting

District Attorney Michael Murray reported that on Monday, September 16, 2024, Jose Portillo was sentenced to 40 years incarcerated for the offense of Murder. Portillo pled guilty to the offense and waived his right to appeal the conviction as part of the agreement.

Portillo was charged with Murder for the shooting for Ivan Garcia on July 14, 2022. Based upon this charge, Portillo will have to serve half of his sentence day-for-day prior to becoming eligible for parole. Once the parole board has determined that Portillo may be released, Portillo will still face a federal detainer from the U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency. Portillo’s deportation will be mandatory due to his illegal entry into the country.

Garcia’s family was present for entry of the plea agreement and had an opportunity to make a statement regarding how this crime has affected Garcia’s family.
