Brownwood tennis takes down Glen Rose, 13-6, in district, home opener

The Brownwood High tennis team kicked off District 7-4A action with the dedication of the new courts at the high school and a 13-6 victory over Glen Rose Thursday afternoon.

The Lions and Lady Lions (3-2, 1-0) swept all six of the boys and girls doubles matches to set the tone early.

Eric Smith also remained undefeated in singles and doubles competition with a 5-0 record in each, while Ihana Figueroa tallied a key comeback win in singles under the lights.

Collecting doubles victories for the Lions were the No. 1 tandem of Trine Baugh and Blake Hutchins (6-1, 6-1 over Ronit Luhana and JJ Acosta), the No. 2 duo of Smith and Wesley Goodrich (6-1, 6-0 over Jose Saavedra and Jace Young), and the No. 3 pairing of Chance Pinkney and Aiden Oplotnik (6-4, 6-3 over Coben Cowell and Aaron Tonche).

For the Lady Lions, double triumphs belonged to No. 1 Figueroa and Ashlyn Bundick (7-6[3], 6-4 over Carly Wright and Joslin Young), No. 2 Anna Daniel and Amy Decchaleune (6-0, 6-1 over Lillian Lamure and Gabby Moreno), and No. 3 Makenzie Williams and Emory May (6-3, 6-2 over Laney Sublette and Tyler Proctor).

In singles competition, the Lady Lions chalked up four more wins, which were earned by No. 2 Figueroa (6-3, 6-4 over Wright), No. 4 Decchaleuene (6-0, 6-1 over Sublette), No. 5 Williams (6-0, 6-2 over Lamure) and No. 6 May (6-2, 6-0 over Moreno).

Notching victories in the singles play for the Lions were No. 2 Smith (6-0, 6-1 over Acosta), No. 5 Oplotnik (6-1, 6-2 over Saavedra), and No. 6 Andre Martinez (6-1, 6-2 over Tonche).

The Lions and Lady Lions are back in action Thursday, Sept. 12 at Abilene Cooper, and play their next District 7-4A match on Thursday, Sept. 19 at home against Lampasas.
