Hubert Stephenson, a beloved figure in his Benbrook community, passed away on August 26, 2024, at Harris Southwest Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas. Born on March 12, 1931, in Leaday, Texas, Hubert embodied the spirit of dedication, service, and love for his family throughout his ninety-three years of life.

He was the youngest son of William Henry and Mary Pinkston Stephenson. Hubert spent his formative years in the Coleman County communities of Gouldbusk and Hardin, where he attended school. His pursuit of education led him to graduate from Brownwood College of Business, after which he set forth on a professional journey that would culminate in a remarkable career within the grocery industry. For twenty-five years, he lent his skills to Kimbell Grocery before transitioning to Winn-Dixie, where he eventually became the Assistant Controller for the Texas Division.

Beyond his impressive career achievements, Hubert was known for his nurturing spirit. His love for family was profound; he devoted many years to caring for his mother until her passing in 1987. He was not only a dedicated son but also a cherished uncle, leaving a lasting impression on the lives of his beloved nieces and nephews—Nelda Gray, Pamela Harris, Cathy Higgins, Karyn Kane, Gregory Harper, and Randy Stephenson, as well as many cousins, friends and neighbors. Each of them would assert with affection that everyone ought to have a “Hubert” in their lives, a testament to his kindness and generosity.

Hubert delighted in the art of gardening, cultivating a landscape adorned with stunning flowers and a variety of incredible vegetables. His green thumb brought beauty and sustenance to those around him, enriching their lives with the fruits of his labor. For many years, neighborhood meetings were held daily in Hubert’s yard at his home on Johnson Street.

His commitment to service extended into his community, where he volunteered selflessly, contributing his time to local initiatives and the area hospital. His exemplary service was recognized in 2000 when he was honored by the National Association of Senior Friends as the National Male Volunteer, a proud accolade that reflected his dedication to making a difference.

Hubert’s journey was marked by steadfast loyalty to family and a deep-seated love for his community. He is remembered fondly by all who were privileged to know him, leaving behind not only a legacy of hard work and compassion but also a heartfelt reminder of the profound impact one individual can have on the lives of many. He was preceded in death by his sister, Lida Mae Harper, and his brother, Lester Stephenson, and though they are no longer with him in this world, their memories will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew them.

A gentle soul, Hubert Stephenson will be deeply missed yet joyfully remembered, a bright light in our lives that shone brightly during his time on Earth.
