The Brownwood Police Department posted the following on social media Monday afternoon:
Once again, scammers are targeting citizens with claims of a warrant for their arrest for missing a court summons. As a reminder, no law enforcement agency in our entire Brownwood/Brown County region will phone you with those claims AND expect money over the phone.
If you have a legitimate warrant for your arrest and we do phone you, it will be to tell you to turn yourself in. You will already know the offense and many times you would be expecting the warrant. A surprise out of the blue, and claims that money will get you cleared, are sure signs of a scam.
In all you do, never give financial/ personal information over the phone unless you have initiated the call, and you expected to give this information. Keep your confidential information, confidential!
