Our brother in Christ, Ralph Dean Huston, passed away on August 1, 2024. It was a devastating loss to his wife, children, brother, extended family, friends, and peers.

Ralph was born in Brownwood, Texas, to Vernon “Bud” and Vinnie Christine (McCormack) Huston, and baby brother to Carole Huston Spearman and Dallas Huston. He graduated from Brownwood High School in 1970 and completed his education at the University of Texas School of Law in 1978. He joined the Episcopal church in 1975 and carried a strong belief in Jesus’ love and His teachings. “Believe in the words in red” was his truth. Although the ability to help people with his law degree was deeply important to him, it was not his first love. He was a brilliant songwriter, a discerning music lover, and a talented multi-instrumentalist. He proudly followed his son John’s band all over Houston for years and happily taught his children any instrument they requested. He showed everyone that met him kindness, respect, and generosity. He opened his home to people suffering, needing respite, or just needing a good meal — served promptly at seven o’clock every evening. Many have told us that “Ralph was there for me during the most difficult time of my life.” He was a devoted father to his children and stepchildren and a doting Poppy to Keira, Jameson, Nico, Elizabeth, Alistair, Gracie, Jami, and Ella. He shared his sense of humor, his joie de vivre, and his love of great films, history, and politics with the people he loved. He was always able to find a good movie quote for any situation. He, after some grumbling, traipsed all over the country with his wife and, with no grumbling whatsoever, with his grandchildren. Ralph was an avid football fan, following closely his Brownwood High School Lions, the UT Longhorns, and Dallas Cowboys, and he believed in the Houston Astros in good times and bad. Ralph taught his children that cooking for someone is a love language, to live in joy, surround yourself with wonderful people, the taste of the best scotch, and the peace of sitting in the backyard discussing life with a fine cigar. He is survived by his wife, Christina Connor Huston; and his children, Erin Huston (Nicholas Ytuarte), John Huston (Maggie Fraser), Alex Huston, and stepson, James Ward (Taylor Ward); brother, Dallas Huston (Linda Huston); his sister-in-law and one of his devoted caregivers, Alexandria Connor; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, grandbabies, and lifetime friends that he called family. He will be forever missed.

A funeral service is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on August 17, 2024, at Christ Church Cathedral, 1117 Texas Avenue in Houston, Texas, with a gathering to follow in the Sanders Room at The Cathedral. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your chosen organization in the research of Lewy Body Dementia, including (but, as good lawyers say, “not limited to”) the American Brain Foundation or the Lewy Body Dementia Association.
