The Brownwood Police Department issued the following press release Monday afternoon:

On Monday, July 15, 2024, at approximately 1:20 p.m., officers were dispatched to the State of Texas Parole Office, 900 block of Main St., regarding a report of a wanted subject.

When officers arrived, they located 62-year-old Geronimo Franklin Mendieta of Brownwood in the parking lot, attempting to flee on foot. Officers attempted to speak with Mendieta, but he refused to listen to instructions and, instead, retrieved a box cutter razor knife and began slicing his legs, arms, and neck. Serious injuries were caused by this action.

Mendieta was contained and secured by officers with the use of stabilized bean bag rounds. He was then cared for until members of the Brownwood Fire Department and AMR ambulance service arrived to assist. Mendieta was transported to the Hendrick Medical Center-Brownwood where he underwent emergency surgery. The extent of his self-inflicted injuries are unknown at this time.

This remains an ongoing investigation with the Brownwood Police Department being assisted by the local office of the Department of Public Safety Texas Rangers.
