Installation of the new playing surface at Gordon Wood Stadium is in its final stages as the bulk of the playing surface has been laid into place.
As of Wednesday afternoon, end zone lettering was being stitched into the turf, which left the midfield leaping lion logo as the apparent final touch.
All four light towers have also been removed and new LED lights will be installed ahead of the season. The Lions’ first action at Gordon Wood Stadium is set for Aug. 16 as they host Jason Witten’s Argyle Liberty Christian Warriors in the first scrimmage of the preseason.
The last time the turf was replaced at Gordon Wood Stadium was ahead of the 2016 football season.
The rest of the stadium renovations – ADA/code improvements (ramp access, aisles and stairs renovated for code compliance, ADA parking), new concessions and restrooms, home bleacher addition of 1,000 seats, and a new press box with elevator – will begin after the conclusion of the 2024 Lions’ football regular season.
The renovations are part of a $59 million bond that was passed by Brownwood voters in May 2023.
