There will be two new Brown County Commissioners come 2025 as David ‘Doc’ Reid defeated incumbent Wayne Shaw by two votes, 344-342, Tuesday in a runoff election for Precinct 3 Commissioner. With no Democratic opponent in November, Reid has won the election.
Early voting numbers favored Shaw 183-164, but on Election Day Reid owned a 180-159 edge at the ballot box.
“I was expecting it to be close, I didn’t know how close or which way, but I sure appreciate everyone that went out and voted, all the supporters that financially backed me and the people behind the scenes,” Reid said. “It takes a lot of people to do this, and I’m just humbled to be able to step in and help the county out.”
In the Republican Primary election on March 5, Shaw received 708 votes, or 43.78%, in a five-man race while Reid garnered the second-most votes at 318, or 19.67%. No candidate received at least 50 percent of the vote which led to the runoff, as Shaw was seeking a fourth team in the role he has served in since 2013.
Regarding the narrow margin of victory Tuesday night, Reid said, “I knew the numbers would be lower, you just hope the ones that can get out and vote do, and I appreciate that. You always wish more voters would get out. You talk to a lot of people and encourage them to get out to vote. That’s their right and not all countries have that, it’s a privilege to do that. Every vote counts and I appreciate every one of them.”
BrownwoodNews.com has been unable to reach Shaw for comment as of 10 p.m. Tuesday.
Reid joins Kirk Chastain, who upended Precinct 1 Commissioner Gary Worley, in the March 5 primary, as half of the Commissioners Court will be new faces at the turn of the calendar year.
In the race for the vacant Justice of the Peace Precinct 1 seat, Mitchell Jacobson topped Dustin Larremore, 198 votes to 137, or 59.1 percent to 40.9 percent.
In the March 5 three-man primary, Jacobson received 570 votes, or 36.94%, to Larremore’s 522 votes, or 33.83%, which resulted in the runoff.
“We’re excited and I’m thankful for all the support I had,” Jacobson said. “We had a better turnout than I thought we would in this runoff. I’ve very humbled and happy with all the people that came out and cast their vote. I’m excited to get to the courthouse and see what’s in store.”
Larremore said, “It was a great experience. It was wonderful connecting with the community, and I am more than blessed to be in such a great town. I want to thank everyone who supported me through this process. God just has another plan for me.”
With no Democratic opponent in November, Jacobson will take over the seat vacated when Doug Hurt stepped down from the position in November 2023.
