Renovations at Gordon Wood Stadium are continuing as the installation process for the new artificial turf surface is underway.
On Friday, a rock foundation was being established ahead of the placement of the new turf. Removal of the old turf, which made its debut at the stadium in 2016, began on April 27 and Brownwood Lions head football coach and athletic director Sammy Burnett stated the installation of the new turf would be complete by the end of May.
Soon, installation will begin for brighter LED lights that will replace those that have illuminated the playing surface at Gordon Wood Stadium for more than 20 years.
The rest of the stadium renovations – ADA/code improvements (ramp access, aisles and stairs renovated for code compliance, ADA parking), new concessions and restrooms, home bleacher addition of 1,000 seats, and a new press box with elevator – will begin after the conclusion of the 2024 Lions’ football regular season.
Burnett also announced the Brownwood Lions Coach’s Show on KOXE this week that the renovations of Morris Southall Field and Lady Lions Field – home of Brownwood baseball and softball – will kick off June 3.
The renovations are part of a $59 million bond that was passed by Brownwood voters in May 2023.
