Goldthwaite freshman Thompson claims 2A boys golf state title

AUSTIN – Leading by two strokes after shooting a first round 70 at the UIL Class 2A boys golf state tournament Monday at Lions Municipal Golf Course, Goldthwaite Eagle Walt Thompson followed with a 74 Tuesday for a 144 total, a one-stroke victory and an individual state championship as a freshman.

Thompson held off Isaiah Igo of Sundown and Ty Chrisman of Centerville, who both carded 145s. Igo went on to win a playoff for second place on the third extra hole. Igo’s 71 was the low round of the day.

In the team standings, the San Saba Armadillos placed 10th after tallying a 708 team score as they followed a Monday 359 with a Tuesday 349. Shooter Wright recorded a 173 for the Armadillos as he posted an 82 Tuesday after a 91 Monday, followed by Skyler Romero with a 176 with a 91 and an 87, Winton Lackey with another 176 after rounds of 87 and 89, Sterling Proffitt with a 182 after a 90 and a 92, and John Ham with a 185 after a 94 and a 91.

Sonora (307-319=626) won the team state championship followed by runner-up New Home (314-321=635) and third-place Albany (320-316=636).
