ABILENE – For the second consecutive day, the Brownwood Lady Lions were dealt a 10-run loss by the No. 10 Snyder Lady Tigers, as the 2024 softball campaign concluded in the Region I-4A bi-district round of the playoffs, 14-4, Saturday afternoon.
The District 6-4A fourth seed Lady Lions (10-14) also dropped the series opener, 11-1, to 5-4A champion Snyder (27-2-1) Friday at Abilene Cooper High School.
“Snyder’s a good ball program, they earned first place in their district and we knew we were coming in against a giant and I think we handled it with as much grace as possible,” said Lady Lions head coach Cherita Munguia. “It was a hard loss the day before and that’s hard for anybody to get off the bus with. We just tried to stay calm and collected in what we were doing. We started off in the first inning with some runs on the board, but we had some zeros after that. We did have some good at-bats, took some good cuts and we had two home runs. But we still made quite a few errors and we have to find a way to have fewer of those next season.”
Snyder – which scored three runs in the first and fifth innings and four runs apiece in the third and sixth frames – finished with nine hits, but also took advantage of 10 walks and five Brownwood errors.
The Lady Lions finished with six hits – two-run home runs by Tynlea Wilson in the first inning and Peyton Pena in the sixth, along with a pair of singles from Jeniffer Romero, a double by Chloe Walls and a single from Jakayla Peek. Brownwood drew three walks but struck out seven times.
Brownwood three seniors – Addison Welch, Cadyn Christmas and Meredith Osbourn – capped their careers Saturday.
“Our three seniors are the loudest people we have in the dugout on any given day” Munguia said. “I’m glad Addi had the day she did with so many reps out there in right field. There were times this season where a catch from her has been a game-changing play. Christmas has been battling injuries, but she takes every rep at 100 percent, the same with Meredith. Whatever I ask them to do they’re going to do it with a smile on their face and go 100 miles an hour and that speaks to their character and the kind of people they are.”
