Monica Montellano McCorkle, a private care giver, passed away suddenly on April 4, 2024; she was 58 years old. Monica was born on October 17, 1965 in Brownwood to Robert and Dolores Montellano. She grew up in a close-knit family with her sisters, Paula, Sonia and Chrissy and brother, Robert Jr. Brownwood was only her birthplace but her hometown. Monica graduated from Brownwood High School in 1984, she was honored Miss F.F.A sweetheart her junior year. Monica, the baby of our family, was a spoiled little girl. As a child, she had our parents convinced she was allergic to her tears. From then on, we were not allowed to ger her upset or let her cry! After High School, she worked at Eckerd’s drug store in the pharmacy. She went above and beyond for each patient and made sure they felt cared for.

Monica married Donald Gray on March 1, 1985 and they were blessed with a son, Marcus Daniel, and daughter, Marissa Dawn Gray. Sadly, they divorced in 1997.

In 2004, she married Michael McCorkle. Monica loved him with all she had, and longed for the day they reunited as he passed away in 2005. Monica’s true calling was caring for people. She worked with children of all ages at New Horizons for many years. Then, she chose to work with the elderly; those were the most fulfilling years of her life. She put their needs first. She enjoyed cooking and baking, and even sold jars of salsa and homemade Mexican Dinners! Her heart was full as long as she could feed a friend or help someone in need. She’d spend her last dollar helping others, never thinking about herself. Monica was quite the storyteller; she could spin a yarn that you’d begin to question such tall tales. We would listen, then laugh with her, as she loved talking about the happy times in our lives. Monica will be remembered as a kind, compassionate, and generous person. Heaven must have needed an excellent cook because we know she is up there taking over and doing things her way!

Monica is survived by her son, Marcus Gray; daughter Marissa Gober and husband Kendal; grandchildren, Ethan Gray, Karson, Konner, and Korbin Gober; brother, Robert Jr. and wife Mona; sisters, Chrissy Phillip and husband Jim, Paula Montellano and Sonia Calhoon; Monica also leaves behind a large extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins, all of whom will miss her gentle spirit and generous heart.

Monica was preceded in death by her father, Robert Montellano and Mother, Dolores; paternal grandparents, C.C. and Adelaida Montellano; maternal grandparents, John and Paula Gutierrez.
