MINERAL WELLS – A late surge by the Brownwood Lady Lions catapulted them to the District 6-4A track and field team championship here Thursday, while the Lions came up just short in their bid for a title and placed second.

Brownwood will be sending a combined 33 entries – 17 on the girls side and 16 in boys action – to the 5-4A/6-4A area meet at the Abilene ISD Annex near Shotwell Stadium on Friday, April 12, as the top four finishers from each event move on.

The Varsity Lady Lions finished with 169 points to the 134.5 of Stephenville, meanwhile the JV Lady Lions amassed 226 to Stephenville’s 167 to complete the meet sweep for the Brownwood girls.

It was a great day,” said Lady Lions first-year head coach Chelsy Lipsey. “Our JV, we felt like coming in had a good shot and they took care of business. Varsity-wise, we knew it was going to be a close battle with Stephenville and Graham came in and surprised us a little bit. We had some things we didn’t expect happen in the field events early on and that made things real close, but we came out and did what we needed to do in the running so it ended up being a good day.”

The Varsity Lions generated 158 points which trailed only the 206 of Stephenville, while the JV Lions notched 138 points which was behind just Stephenville (190).

The Lady Lions overcame a slow start Thursday to eventually collect 14 medals – 8 gold, 2 silver, and 4 bronze. Leading the charge for the Brownwood girls were Kaya Phillips, who played a part in four gold medals, while Sidney Windham helped account for three victorious efforts.

It shows that battling adversity is huge and they were able to do that and that’s going to help us out in the long run, too.,” Lipsey said of the Lady Lions digging themselves out of an early hole. “Next week we have area, then regionals and it’s going to get tougher and tougher, but we have some chances to get some girls to Austin if we just do what we need to do.”

The Lions, meanwhile, brought home 13 medals – 6 gold, 3 silver, and 4 bronze. Ike Hall won gold in all five of his events – the long jump, triple jump and high jump, and also as a member of the 4×100 and 4×200 relays.

Clinging to a 1.5 point lead with three events remaining, the Lady Lions produced a total of 56 points in the 200 meters, mile, and mile relay to run away with the crown.

In the 200 we got first and third, then the mile was awesome where we went first, third and fourth so that got us some big points there,” Lipsey said. “We knew we’d been running well in the mile relay so if we took care of business there we’d be all right. We just have to work on getting that time down the next few weeks and we’ll have a chance to do something at regionals.”

As for being able to achieve district championships on both the varsity and JV level in her first season in Brownwood, Lipsey said, “Brownwood’s always had athletes and I was following them last year trying to decide what I wanted to do. When I decided to take the job I knew we had a chance to be district champs and we had a ton of girls that came out. They work hard, they’ve been doing good all season and I’m excited to see how we build in the future. Plus the seventh and eighth grade, the couple of meets I got to watch, we’ve got some good ones coming so I’m excited to see what we can do the next few years.”
