According to District Attorney Micheal Murray, during the March 2024 session of the Brown County Grand Jury, 19 true bills were returned against 17 persons.
Among the true bills were two for murder – one for James Harvey and one for Joseph Dean Williamson.
On Wednesday, November 22, 2023, a 911 phone call from a citizen residing at the Wayside Apartments reported a male, covered in blood, lying on a staircase outside of an apartment.
Harvey was initially arrested for Aggravated Assault Causing Serious Bodily Injury, but Brownwood detectives later learned the victim never regained consciousness and passed away. The charge against Harvey was consequently upgraded to Murder.

On Wednesday, December 27, 2023, a citizen reported that they just witnessed a shooting in the area of 5th St and Ave E.
Emergency responders arrived in the area and located a male victim who had sustained a single gunshot wound. The victim was transported to Hendrick Medical Center Brownwood where lifesaving measures continued to be taken, but the victim was later pronounced deceased by the attending physician.
The suspect, Williamson, fled the scene in a pickup but a traffic stop was later initiated which turned into a vehicle pursuit for a brief time. The suspect eventually pulled over and was taken into custody without further incident.
Williamson was then transported to the Brownwood Law Enforcement Center where he met with Brownwood detectives. He was then escorted to the Brown County Jail where he was charged with Evading in a Vehicle, for which he was also indicted, and Murder.

The District Attorney’s Office does not release names on new indictments until after the Grand Jury proceedings have been processed through the District Clerk and a file marked copy of the Grand Jury Report has been returned.
The District Attorney’s Office does not release names of Defendants who have been indicted by a Grand Jury but not yet arrested because of an indictment being sealed until the time of arrest. In addition, names of individuals who have had no formal charges filed against them and who are no-billed by a Grand Jury will not be released by the District Attorney’s Office at this time.
