George Munson Caldwell, Jr. passed away, surrounded by family, at Hendrick-North hospital in Abilene on December 11, 2023. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, December 16, 2023 at the Early First Baptist Church.

George was born in Freeport, Texas on December 20, 1948. He was a graduate of the Angleton High School class of 1967 and served 6 years in the Army National Guard. He was a Texas Gulf Coast resident until moving to Brown County in 2009, after his retirement from the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Department where he served for 23 years. While with the Sheriff’s Department, he served as a member of the SWAT Team, Mounted Patrol, and was an instructor for the D.A.R.E. program and also a firearms instructor. George also served as a volunteer fire fighter for the Rosharon Volunteer Fire Department and was a Deacon with the First Baptist Church of Rosharon. The retirement lifestyle wasn’t a good fit for George so he went back to his love of law enforcement as a courthouse security officer for the Brown County Sheriff’s Department. In 2015, he was appointed Sheriff by Commissioner’s Court and served until the election of Sheriff Vance Hill. As a Brown County resident, he served on the Board of Directors for the ARK Domestic Violence Shelter, was a member of the Masonic Lodge, and a Deacon with the First Baptist Church or Early. George was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and a friend to all.

George is survived by his wife, Jessica; daughter, Lisa Caldwell; and grandson, Jamison Mapel, all of Early, TX; sister-in-law, Debbie Thurman and husband Bob of Angleton, TX; sister-in-law, Billie Dean Carr and husband Robbie also of Angleton, TX, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Dell Wooley Caldwell; his father, George Munson Caldwell, Sr. and his brother, Kenneth David “Kenny” Caldwell.
