Man on Wheelchair Scooter Faces Theft and Assault Charges

A man on a scooter was arrested by Brownwood Police on Tuesday evening, charged with theft and aggravated assault.

According to Brownwood Police, it was at approximately 7:00 pm on Tuesday that officers were dispatched to a theft report in the 2600 block of Morris Shepherd Drive.

The reporting caller stated that she observed a male subject on a wheelchair ‘scooter’ steal bags of groceries from a vehicle that was being unloaded.  The caller was following the suspect to the RV park in the 2600blk of Morris Shepherd.

Officer Heath Oakley arrived and received a summary of the reported theft by the witness.  He then traveled to a particular RV spot and identified the suspect as John Robert Schubert, 58, of Brownwood.

Schubert admitted to the theft while speaking with the officers.  He then became belligerent and aggressive toward officers, trying to fight with them and kick them from his RV spot.  While acting in this manner, Schubert’s dog attempted to attack officers which was further encouraged by Schubert’s commands to the dog, according to the police report.

At the conclusion of the investigation, Schubert was arrested for Theft w/Previous Convictions and Aggravated Assault.  According to online jail records, bonds total $25,000.
