Wanda Joy Burns, age 87, of Brady, joined her Lord and Savior on September 17, 2023 in Houston, Texas. She was born March 5, 1936 in San Saba, Texas to Ralph Bert Slaughter and Altha (Bessent) Slaughter. She graduated from San Saba High School in 1953 and embarked upon her career with the telephone company. It was during this time while working in Brady that she met her husband Bill while she was having some work done on her car at Duncan Chevrolet. They married in 1962 and recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and active in numerous committees there over the years, the highlight of which was co-founding the ladies “Round Table Luncheon” with her friend Maurice Mallow. She was also a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority, Brady Band Boosters and an avid bridge player participating in several bridge groups. She loved to travel, garden, work jigsaw puzzles and entertain. She was a very talented seamstress and quilter. She loved to pull pranks on family and friends and was always game for anything fun. Most of all, she cherished spending time with her family and was quite the doting “Nammy” to her two granddaughters.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday September 23, 2023 at 10:30 am at the First Baptist Church in Brady with burial at Rest Haven Cemetery with Reverend Stacey Evans officiating.
The family with receive visitors from 5:00 – 7:00 pm on Friday at Leatherwood Memorial Chapel in Brady.
Pallbearers will be Mike Worthan, Robert York, Damon Slaughter, Shannon Slaughter, Gene Alexander, and Kim Slaughter. Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Barnhill, Gene Edmiston, Michael Phillips and Kirk Slaughter.

She is survived by her husband Bill Burns, daughter Media Nazarenus and husband Steve of Houston, granddaughters Nicole Nazarenus, Laura Marcyes and husband Max, all of Austin, brothers Larry Slaughter and wife Judy of Andrews, Steve Slaughter and wife Susan of Belton along with many special nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Betty York (Buck), brothers Ralph Bert, Jr., Jerry Slaughter (Elva) and Gary Slaughter.
