Douglas was born on January 30th, 1927 in Whon, Texas near the Colorado River in Coleman County.  He lives on through his beloved wife Rene of 73 years; children Jackye, Douglas Jr. and wife Kelly; grandchildren Jeremy and Deborah and Seth and Sarah; 5 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Douglas Sr. is preceded in death by his parents Pearl and Aaron Avants along with his brother James Avants.

After Douglas graduated from Santa Anna High School, he served in the US Army and Air Force during World War II.  He married Rene on September 28, 1950 in Rockwood, Texas.  He worked for Mead’s Bread for 8 1/2 years then another 25 years with Gandy’s Dairy Company before retiring in 1991.  After retirement, work continued volunteering for 25 years with the Meals-On-Wheels program serving the members of the community.  He also worked at the senior center as an office assistant for the past 12 years until the age of 95.  Douglas was devoted to Central Baptist Church where he and Rene were active members.  Douglas greatly enjoyed spending his time tending his garden and giving away the wonderful vegetables he grew.  He also enjoyed hunting and spending time on the family farm in Whon, Texas.  One of his life-long passions was to modify or create things; he knew how to make anything serve a purpose for his particular need.  Douglas was a kind man who loved conversations and sharing memories with others.  The past few years he has found peace watching the doves and other birds in his yard.  His warm smile and embracing love will live on through his family and many friends.
