Jimmie Hudson likes the challenge of creating art:   “I like to stretch myself to learn new techniques and designs.”   Originally from Lamesa, and now living in Early with her husband Otis, Jimmie is the Brownwood Art Association’s Artist of the Year for 2023.   Her exhibit opens with a First Thursday reception at the Art Center, 215 Fisk, on July 6, from 5-7 pm.  This event is free and the public is invited to attend.  Light refreshments will be served.

Jimmie explains her process, saying “I take lots of photographs, and I love the challenge of changing the photo into a good painting composition and still maintaining the essence of the photograph.  The challenge is the inspiration for me.”  She is equally willing to work from a photo brought by a family member, or one of their friends.

While her favorite medium is watercolor, particularly watercolor on canvas, she isn’t afraid to try other media.  She contributed several textile pieces to the recent Art of Fiber exhibit at the Art Center.  She credits the support of family and friends as a major influence on her art.  “They have given me only praise and encouragement.  With that kind of backing,  how could I fail?  Also, I have been blessed with artist friends who have been my mentors.”

The Artist of the Year exhibit continues through July 28. Regular gallery hours are 2-6 pm, weekdays.  For more information about the Brownwood Art Association, find us on Facebook, visit www.brownwoodart.net, or call 325-641-2916.
