Start your new year with a stop by the Art Center gallery in downtown Brownwood at 215 Fisk. Check out a diverse exhibit that will include paintings, pots, 3D assemblages, collage, and photography. Six local artists will be featured in this invitational event, and you can meet them at the Opening Reception, Thursday, January 5, from 5 to 7 pm. Everyone is invited and refreshments will be served.
Linda Hall Eggleston especially enjoys painting objects and scenes of the remote areas of New Mexico and Texas where she has lived and worked. She has long taught and exhibited in this area. Watch for her demonstration at the upcoming Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit. Her advice: “The right time to start to paint is now, so ENJOY!”
Charlotte Cooper creates gallery 3D artwork from broken or seemingly useless old stuff. Pocket watches or violins, for example, having outlived their original purpose, now tell a different story. Viewers are intrigued by the way she combines these objects with clay sculpture, painting and photography. Look closely for the small and secret details that emerge. Charlotte is a graduate of Hardin Simmons University, and has been featured on the Texas Country Reporter television show.
Photographer Jim Blake was recently featured in the Brownwood Art Association Photography Group exhibit, sharing the honor of Photographer of the Year with two others. Jim’s images evoke the stark beauty of both rural and urban and industrial settings.
Donna Lewis owes much of her sense of space, color, and form to the patchwork vistas of the New Mexico landscape. Donna’s creative journey started with quilting, progressing to watercolor and acrylic painting, and collage. She says “I start with few expectations and work intuitively, allowing the work to evolve to a point where it begins to speak to me. The art and the process need mystery, attention to detail, and an open-ended outcome to hold my interest.”
Joan Stewart earned a B.S. degree in Textiles and Clothing, and spent years doing clothing construction, design, and quilting. She explores thread painting, felting, and dying fabrics to create her fiber art. The exploration of new and old techniques, paired with a love of nature, guide the emphasis of her art.
Mike Lewis will be sharing his ceramics. He says “All my pots will be various Raku firing techniques. Most are vases.” There will be a lot of them, around 50, so there’s sure to be an interesting variety.
