Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay announced on Monday the firing of head coach Frank Reich after a 3–5–1 start to the season, which included a blowout loss at New England on Sunday. Irsay also announced that six-time Pro Bowl center and current ESPN NFL analyst Jeff Saturday has been named interim coach – despite never coaching at the college or professional level.
Over 4 1/2 seasons in Indianapolis, Reich compiled a 40–33-1 record with a 1–2 record in the postseason. Indianapolis’s current season under Reich – a former offensive coordinator in Philadelphia – has been off-track for a variety of reason. The Colts traded quarterback Carson Wentz last offseason for veteran Matt Ryan, but after a disappointing start for Indianapolis, Ryan was benched in favor of second-year pro Sam Ehlinger. However through two starts, Ehlinger has played inconsistently.
