Bed Building Event Saturday Morning in Brownwood

Sleep in Heavenly Peace will hold its fourth annual Bunks Across America event, a bed building project that 180 chapters nationwide participate in a with a goal of building 6,000 beds on Saturday to help local communities throughout the United States.

“It has been an incredible blessing to me and my team to be able to help kids in need,” Robert Clark, owner of Kanar RV Sales, said of his involvement with Sleep in Heavenly Peace in a Thursday morning radio interview on KOXE.

“It’s an organization that started about 10 years ago with one guy building one bed. He said he knew there was a family in his town in Twin Falls, Idaho, that needed a bed, and he got 40 bed requests for that one single bed. You fast forward to todayand there’s almost 300 chapters of Sleep in Heavenly Peace in the U.S. and Canada.”

“With a lot of families, there’s enough money for rent and food, but there’s not enough money at the end of the month to buy some necessities including beds for kids,” Clark said. “We see families all the time where kids are sleeping on the floor, on couches, air mattresses or with mom or dad. Nobody gets a great night’s sleep if they’re not in a comfortable bed.”

Children ages 3-17 are eligible for “a brand-new bed dipped in a bed bug resistant stain, along with brand a new mattress, pillows, comforter, and a sheet set,” Clark said. “For some kids it’s the first bed they’ve ever had.”

To apply for a bed from Sleep in Heavenly Peace, visit the Sleep in Heavenly Peace website and a local representative will reach out.

Bunks Across America will take place from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10 at 3M.

“We’re going to knock out about 20 beds between 8 and 11 a.m.,” Clark said. “Volunteers who come to 3M, get there at 8 a.m. and we’ll starting building around 8:15, be done by 10:45, and be cleaned up by 11. We’ll be doing a great thing to help people in our community.”

Volunteers need to bring nothing but themselves, no tools, Clark added.
