David Michael Murphy, age 73, of Brownwood passed away suddenly on Thursday, July 21, 2022, at Hendrick Medical Center Brownwood.
David was born on October 12, 1948, to Ira Frank Murphy and Jean (Salter) Murphy in Brownwood. During his youth, the family moved from Brownwood to San Antonio where Michael attended Roosevelt High School and enjoyed playing football. After high school, he enlisted in the US Navy where he proudly served his tour of duty on the aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy on her first voyage.
Upon his discharge from the service, Michael trained as a skilled carpenter, which prepared him for a lifetime of work he loved on projects both large and small in several states. After his diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease in December of 2019, he continued with small projects and did so until his death. Throughout his life, he greatly enjoyed being outdoors, spending many happy hours fishing and hunting.
Michael is survived by his son, John Wesley Murphy of California; daughters, Jennifer Murphy of Austin, Molly Murphy of Bangs, and Sarah Moore of Bangs; 3 grandsons, Vincent Murphy of Brownwood, Christian Murphy of Austin, and Mason Murphy of Austin; and granddaughter, Emma Murphy of Austin. He is also survived by sisters, Judy Medcalf of Brownwood and Marilyn Roberts of Austin. Prominent among survivors is his beloved golden retriever, Muttly, who was his great companion and loved being outdoors as much as he did.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ira and Jean Murphy.
In accord with his wishes, Michael will be cremated and there will be no services. Arrangements are under the direction of Blaylock Funeral Home of Brownwood.
Memorials can be made to a charity of choice or the Corrine T. Smith Animal Shelter. Online condolences for the family are welcome at www.blaylockfuneralhome.com.
