Lorenzo Rubio, age 86, of Brady, Texas passed away Sunday, May 1, 2022, in Bandera, Texas.
Lorenzo was born on September 5, 1935, in Brady, Texas to Amarante Rubio and Florencia (Morin) Rubio. Lorenzo grew up in Brady and attended Brady High School and married Rosa E. Dominguez on December 29, 1957, in Brady, Texas. Lorenzo was a Letter Carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for many years, retiring in December 1999 and was a lifelong resident of Brady. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Brady where he was active in St. Patrick’s Church Parish Council and Knights of Columbus. Lorenzo was also active in the community, volunteering with the Boy Scouts of America Troop #425. He served as past president of the Famed Brady Bulldog Band Boosters and on the McCulloch County Helping Hands Board of Directors.
Being the oldest son in a family of seven children, Lorenzo left school at age sixteen to help support the family when his father passed away. His first job was at the future Loadcraft Industries, using a fake ID card and a stool to help him reach the conveyor belt as he was only sixteen years old. Lorenzo went on to work at the Brady Standard-Herald and drove the freight truck for United Parcel Service on the Brady to Abilene route every night for three years. He began working at the Brady Post Office in 1972.
Lorenzo participated in the first World Championship BBQ Goat Cook-off in 1974. His involvement inspired an annual family gathering each Labor Day weekend which gave way to the team’s name of “Las Familias.” Lorenzo continued to compete, and “Las Familias” grew over the years as the family expanded with marriages of children, nieces and nephews. Friends would say, “we always know where “Las Familias” campsite is.” The campsite was always open to extended family, friends and visitors passing through who had never tasted barbeque goat. Lorenzo only missed one year of competition until he handed the cooking reins over to his grandson Leo and nephews, Frank Galindo, and Dan Barrera in 2018.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Lorenzo Rubio will be held at 10:00am Monday, May 9, 2022, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Brady with Father Terry Brenon officiating. Interment will follow at Rest Haven Cemetery in Brady.
The family will receive friends between 5:00pm and 7:00pm Sunday at Leatherwood Memorial Chapels in Brady with the Holy Rosary being recited at 7:00pm. Friends may view Lorenzo’s Memorial Video Tribute and/or sign his online memorial guest book at www.leatherwoodmemorialchapels.com.
Pallbearers will be Frank Galindo, Eddie Galindo, Raymond Barrera, Daniel Barrera, Lorenzo Mata, and George Rubio. Fred Galindo, Jr. will be an Honorary Pallbearer.
