Commissioners Delay Appointment of County Attorney Until Next Week

Brown County Commissioners met briefly Monday morning, March 7.  All Commissioners were present. County Judge Paul Lilly presided.  The meeting lasted 13 minutes.

The primary item on the agenda regarded possible appointment for the County Attorney position.

“When Shane Britton (current County Attorney) ran for County Judge, we talked about not appointing a County Attorney until after the March Primary.  It’s now after the Primary, there was no Democratic opponent, Mrs. Broughton didn’t have an opponent in the Republican Primary so she, in November, will be the County Attorney elect,” said Gary Worley, Commissioners Precinct 1.

Jennifer Broughton, who ran unopposed in the Republican Primary, was unable to attend the meeting Monday morning.

“I’ve spoken with her and Shane has spoken with her.  She would like to have a start date of April 1.  We can either go ahead and appoint her this morning to take office on April 1, or can wait until next week when she gets here or we can wait until April 1st, whatever we want to do” Worley stated.

County Attorney Shane Britton recommended that the appointment of Broughton be made after the election has been canvassed.

“We just need to wait until after they canvass the vote,” Britton said.  “I would just do it next Monday and we’ll ask Larry (Elections Administrator) about canvassing the votes at the same time,” Britton said.

No action was taken at this time.  County Judge Lilly asked that the item be placed back on the agenda for the next Commissioners Court meeting on Monday, March 14, at 9:00 am.
