The Welcome W. Chandler Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT) would like to say, “Thanks y’all!” for the community’s help in honoring Brown County veterans.

Several Brownwood businesses are supporting the Brownwood DRT’s effort to honor veterans buried at Greenleaf Cemetery with Christmas wreaths this holiday season. The goal of the project is to remember our veterans, honor their service and teach children about the cost of freedom.

The local DRT’s project is part of Wreath’s Across America’s world-wide effort to recognize the service and sacrifices of American veterans. The local DRT is asking Brown County citizens to purchase the $15 wreaths and support this worthy cause. In addition to honoring our hometown veterans, $5 from every wreath sold will go to Greenleaf Cemetery maintenance and DRT education programs.

Wreaths may be purchased by scanning the QR code on posters and flyers.  This is the only method of purchasing wreaths.

DRT has showcased just a few local heroes on posters, which are on display in businesses, churches and schools around town. Posters can be seen at Shaw’s Marketplace, The Glamour Shop, The Turtle Restaurant, Teddy’s Brewhouse, Weakley Watson Hardware, Texas Bank, First Baptist Church, Schlotzky’s, Citizen’s Bank, Texas Bank, and Underwood’s Cafeteria.

On Veteran’s Day Shaw’s Marketplace will exhibit all the posters featuring nine Brown County veterans. The exhibition will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 11 (Veterans Day). All veterans visiting Shaw’s that day will receive free coffee and “thank yous” for their service. The public, young and old alike, are invited to Shaw’s to view the posters of local heroes and learn about their service and sacrifice.

DRT president Dr. Julie Welker invites everyone to visit Shaw’s on Veterans Day and celebrate these brave heroes.
