MARSHALL, Texas – The Howard Payne University football team recorded three fourth quarter interceptions to defeat East Texas Baptist University 49-38 Saturday afternoon in conference action. Yellow Jackets are now 4-0 on the year, the best start for Howard Payne since 2002.
The Yellow Jackets defense shined holding the Tigers to just 97 yards rushing. The HPU defense also got a safety to start the second, and recorded three fourth quarter interceptions to secure the victory for Howard Payne.
Dai’Shawn Fisher anchored the Jacket defense with eight tackles, two for loss which included the safety for HPU. Peyton Lowe followed with seven tackles and two interceptions, one returned for a touchdown. Kyle Bell recorded the other HPU interception along with four tackles and one pass breakup.
Landon McKinney was 23 of 38 passing for 405 yards, three passing touchdowns and one rushing. McKinney led the HPU offense to 541 total yards and five TDs.
Tauren Bradley led the rushing attack with 61 yards on 21 carries, Derrick Berry followed with 37 yards on 11 carries and one TD.
Jake Parker finished with seven catches for 181 yards and two touchdowns. Otis Lanier added 123 receiving ards and one TD one on six catches.
The Yellow Jackets are now 4-0 overall and 3-0 in American Southwest Conference action. ETBU stands at 2-2 overall and 1-2 in league play.
Howard Payne will play Sul Ross State next weekend at home. It will be a 3:30 pm kickoff.
