Catalytic Converter Possible Cause of Comanche Fires

The catalytic converter on someone’s vehicle may have started several grass fires in Comanche County, fires which were still being extinguished this morning (Tues).

Comanche County Judge Stephanie Davis put out a statement this morning asking residents who have traveled on Highway 1689 to check their catalytic converter as fire chiefs believe that is what started the fires Monday.  Three new spot fires were reported Tuesday morning which firefighters were able to extinguish quickly.

Catalytic converters and other exhaust components on a vehicle can ignite high grass they come in contact with.  They can also fail and propel white-hot pieces of metal which can start fires.

Comanche and numerous volunteer departments responded to multiple grass fires Monday on Highway 1689 just at the edge of Comanche.  The fires continued beside the road past Round Mountain.
