A graveside funeral service for David Larson Simpson Holmes, age 85, of Cross Plains, will be held at 4:30 PM, Saturday, September 11, 2021, in the Wolf Valley Cemetery, with Pastor Rick Justice officiating, under the direction of Heartland Funeral and Cremation Service of Early.
David passed from this life on Friday, September 3, 2021, in an Abilene hospital.
David was born on August 17, 1936, in Glens Falls, New York to Albert and Vivian Holmes. He attended Glens Falls schools and joined the US Army. He later went on to serve in the US Navy and retired as a Lt. Commander in 1972. David was known as a strong political conservative. He also pastored a church in Minnesota.
In 1960, David married Nelda Hardy of May. David and Nelda moved to Cross Plains in 1978, where he ranched and operated Holmes Insurance Agency. They were married for forty years until her death. He later married Jane Alford of Columbus, Georgia.
While serving in the Army in Germany, David was saved and dedicated his life to Christ. He returned to Howard Payne as a dedicated Christian. All of his life he remained a soldier of the cross and exhibited the character of Christ. Now he rejoices in Heaven as he meets all of his Biblical heroes and his Lord. He will be greatly missed.
David is survived by his wife Jane Alford Holmes; four children, Leland Holmes, Michael Watson, Tracy Law and Rebekah Holmes; two step-children, Mark Westcott and Ellen Rowley; 17 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
