Roy, a lifetime railroader and cattle raiser, loved dancing with his wife, sitting on the porch enjoying the breeze, traveling, and skiing.
Roy was born December 2, 1946 in Menard, Texas to Denzel and Gwendolyn (Oliver) Shannon. He graduated from Richland Springs High School and then moved to Del Rio where he met the love of his life (Winnie) and began his railroad career of 41 years. In 1966 not only did Roy serve his country in the Vietnam War as an expert sharpshooter, decorated veteran and Purple Heart recipient, but he married the love of his life Winnie.
In 2007 Roy retired from the Union Pacific Railroad (formerly Southern Pacific) and he and Winnie moved to Richland Springs. There they spent their time together working cows, dancing, laughing with friends, and enjoying the country life.
Roy passed in peace at the age of 74 after a long battle with AML. Roy is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Winnie (Osteen) Shannon, daughter Telisha (Shannon) Latham and husband Robert Latham. son Cody Shannon, grandchildren Ashton and Grant Dicke, and Kelton Shannon, sisters Erline Daniels and Vicki Oubre (Micheal), twin brother Troy Shannon (Paula), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and longtime friends. He is preceded in death by his parents Denzil and Gwendolyn Shannon, sisters Sierra Mayfield and MaryAnn Liepelt.
Roy will be fondly remembered by family and friends.
A celebration of life service will be held Monday, August 2, 2021 at 11:00am. The service will be held at the Richland Springs Cemetery, 300 Brown St., Richland Springs, Texas.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Leukemia Society in Roy’s name.
