Contact your insurance agent. The best and fastest way for individuals with damaged property to start recovery is by contacting their insurance company and taking photos of any damage. Open a claim and confirm how they need you to proceed with documenting and repairing damage. They may not reimburse for repairs made without their permission.
Research repair services – Research plumbers, electricians, and restoration service companies at BBB.org. A good rule of thumb is to get a minimum of three estimates, which can be done through the BBB’s Get-a-Quote program. Don’t be swayed by high-pressure sales tactics.
Get everything in writing – The following are some things you will want your estimate/contract to include:
- License and insurance information
- Scope of work to be done, including permits, material and labor costs
- Who is responsible for repairing/replacing exterior landscape or interior finishes that are damaged during the course of the work?
- Approximate starting and completion dates, including hauling away project waste
- Payment and warranty details (Be wary of firms asking for large payments in advance)
John Riggins, CEO of the BBB of Abilene and The Big Country warns residents, “It is wise to be on the lookout for scammers who are seeking to take advantage of an owner’s haste to repair damage. If you have a problem, please let us know.”
