County Commissioners Leave Burn Ban Off, Adopt Budget and Tax Rate

Brown County Commissioners met Monday morning, September 21, with all present and Commissioner Joel Kelton presiding in the absence of County Judge Paul Lilly.  The following business was conducted.

  • The Brown County burn ban remains off.
  • Voted 4-0 to opt out of presidential order regarding payroll taxes.
  • Held a public hearing on the proposed budget for 20-21.  There was no one present to speak.
  • Voted 4-0 to approve adoption of the proposed county budget.
  • Voted 4-0 to approve setting of salaries of elected officials. Those are as follows: County Judge – $82,072.16 annually; County Court at Law Judge – $193,400 annually; County Clerk – $60,148.07 annually; District Clerk – $60,148.07 annually; Justices of the Peace Pct. #1,2,3,& 4 – $51,204.85 annually; County Treasurer – $60,148.07 annually; County Tax Assessor/Collector – $60,148.07 annually; County Sheriff – $77,829.01 annually; District Attorney – $2,500 county supplement annually; County Attorney – $124,412.03 annually; Constables #1,2,3 & 4 – $42,147.33 annually; Commissioners – Pct. #1,2,3 & 4 – $60,148.07 annually; District Judge County Supplement – $12,610.59.  It was noted that every county employee received a 5% raise, or $2,000, whichever was greater.
  • Voted 4-0 to adopt the proposed tax rate of 0.5776. This tax rate will effectively raise more taxes for maintenance and operations than last year’s rate by 1.32%.   Of the 0.5776, the General Fund Rate accounts for 0.4677, the Debt Service Rate is 0.0193, the Road and Flood Rate is 0.0906.
  • Voted 4-0 to approve action regarding county personnel changes in cleaning services at the courthouse.
  • Took no action regarding agreement between Brown County and Allison Bass & Magee, L.L.P. in reference to redistricting of Brown County. It was noted that this agreement was approved in 2018.
  • Took no action on a request for reimbursement of money for firefighting foam used on an oilfield tank battery fire on September 2, 2020 on FM 2492.
  • Took no action regarding ratification of the Brown County Inter Local Agreement for Dispatch Services.
