Side Scanning Sonar Being Used in Search for Woman and Vehicle Swept Away by Flood Waters Last Sunday

The office of Brown County Emergency Management provided the following information late Friday afternoon, May 17.

The Brown County Office of Emergency Management and Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife continue recovery operations at Ten Mile Crossing where a pickup truck with 3 occupants went into the swift moving water earlier in the week.  The driver and one passenger managed to escape, one person remains missing.

Texas Dept. of Parks and Wildlife Game Wardens are using remote-piloted drones and a boat to visually check the river, its banks, and land areas on either side of the river in hopes of locating the Nissan pickup or the third passenger.

“River levels have continued to drop and we can now safely use boats to enhance our search efforts,” reported Chief David Creed, Brown County Emergency Management.  According to Creed, Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife teams can utilize boats equipped with side-scanning sonar in some areas.  Game wardens are currently using that equipment to assist in the search.  “Recovery divers are available but the water continues too fast to safely use divers to assist in recovery efforts unless there is a specific target to dive on,” said Creed.

Recovery efforts will continue if the weather allows.
