Drunk driver nearly strikes off-duty peace officer

Two deputies with the Brown County Sheriff’s Department responded to the area of Hwy 279 and FM 2492 in an attempt to locate a vehicle that was reported by a Brownwood Police Officer to be been travelling in excess of 100 m.p.h. Despite activating lights and sirens, the driver refused to stop and continued north on Hwy 279. The driver temporarily lost control of the vehicle at Park Rd. 15, almost crashing, then continued on Hwy 279, until turning on CR 105. The driver left the roadway and crashed. After an extensive search, the driver of the vehicle was not located. A search of the vehicle found a Texas identification card and social security card, along with 3.5 grams of marijuana.

Deputy Jose Rodriguez was dispatched to C.C. Woodson regarding a reckless driver. The suspect, identified as Douglas Alan Merrow, was eastbound on the wrong side of the road and nearly struck an off-duty peace officer, who was travelling westbound. After further investigation, Merrow was arrested for driving while intoxicated.

In other incidents:
• Responded to a burglary on CR 334. An unknown person entered a residence being remodeled and stole several tools as well as a window air conditioning unit.
• A deputy met with an individual at the law enforcement center in reference to someone using personal information to open several credit card accounts.
